Ford FE Engine Intake Manifolds: The Ultimate Guide

It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the language and ideas that represented each year. So, take a stroll down memory lane to remember all of our past Word of the Year selections. Change It wasn’t trendy , funny, nor was it coined on Twitter , but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined Unlike in , change was no longer a campaign slogan. But, the term still held a lot of weight. Here’s an excerpt from our Word of the Year announcement in

PCV System for 390

There are more vacuum ports on the Quadrajet then on the Edelbrock and I’m wondering if anyone knows where I should hook everything up. I put the brake booster on the back in the same place it was on the Quadrajet. There is another small vacuum port at a 45 degree angle that I hooked up the vacuum advance on the distributor to.

The pcv valve went to the lower one on the front. Lastly I have one that is hooked up to my th trans that I put somewhere, can’t remember off the top of my head.

Sep 11,  · The PCV valve should be connected to a vacuum source under the carb rather than in an intake runner like the vacuum source for the power brake booster. When I installed a Holley on my truck the carb did not have a fitting to provide a vacuum source for the PCV valve so this is what I did.

September 10th, , Here’s the story; Have a stroker edlebrock everything, heads, intake, water pump etc. I have hooked the PCV vacum line to the back of the carb. I am creating so much vacum at this point that the brand new vacum line closes and opens with the PCV valve. Its like the car is breathing. With every flucuation the engine rpms go up and down 2 – rpm.

I am using the stock ECU from the LS1 Camaro, with the reluctor converter, injector adapters and needed sensor conversions, Texas speed and performance has done the basic tune. The motor has a competition balancer that scavenges a few hp, cold air induction by SLP,85mm maf by granatelli, 92mm cable driven TB, 4l60E tranny with new valves and shift kit, rpm stall converter, larger tranny pan by 5 quarts and a cooler, rear end gears, dual 3″ exhaust with dual cats and electric cutouts after cats, and some sticky Nitto street drag tires, suspension , brakes and torque arm, chassey are all upgraded.

Unfortunately a disclaimer of this nature is necessary due to the fact that we are delaing with a fuel delivery source and this information is sent out over the internet with little or no control. For these same reasons I will not be a part to any recommendations to modify a fuel pump or in this instance, any recommendations to modify a carb , I hope everyone can understand the need for the following disclaimer becuase it is there for a reason, and that is to provide notice this is a potentially dangerous or costly thing to do, and if you elect to do so you proceed at your own risk.

The following photos and text documentation is provided in the best of faith and to provide information to my fellow boating enthusiasts. This procedure may not be in conformance with USCG laws or safety regulations, so this information is NOT a recommendation or suggestion, it is only a documentation regarding what I did with my carb for my own personal use. Since there is NO assurance the actual carb body I drilled into is the same as the one someone else may have, and no assurance the manufacturer did not change the internal or external casting, neither I, the Chris-Craft Commander Forum, Inc.

Photo below is compliments of TS Clymer, showing the standard method of hooking from the valve cover mounted PCV valve with a copper tube to the carb. If the PCV system is not working on these motors you will get a real stench on board, and the fumes will build up inside the sump, making acid and potentially being explosive in the event there is a fuel leak. The standard Carter AFB carb as provided on the engines has a fitting tapped into the aft side of the carb which is intended to hook up to the PCV system.

The photo above shows the fitting as installed in a Carter AFB marine cfm carb. The Edelbrock marine cfm carb is a clone of the original AFB and although not identical, it is nearly identical but with some improvements. The carb is not drilled for the PCV system so we have to do that ourselves if we are going to hook things up properly and control fumes, oder and run the system as intended by Chris Craft. The has a nice dimple on the front where you can drill.

I called Edelbrock and the tech guy was rather set in reciting the company position like a recording machine, saying they tested the carb without the PCV system and it was therefore only certified with the EPA yadda yadda, and he did not want to hear anything about the merits of controlling the odor and fumes that come from a crankcase. He was of absolutely no assistance in helping, yet Edelbrock cast in a dimple where we are given the big hint and a wink to drill for the PCV system.

The fuel rail kit alone is well worth its cost just for the ease of assembly. We considered creating individual fuel lines for each carb on the dyno so we could separate the fuel flow but because the clearance between the carbs is so tight, it will take some custom fabrication should this be your plan. The three-deuce package also comes with an equally easy linkage kit that delivers a staged throttle opening. We discovered during the assembly that it was essential to ensure the center carb opens fully.

That package produced a reliable lb-ft of torque at 4, rpm and hp at 6, using an Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane intake and a cfm four-barrel carburetor.

The one right across from the pcv was perfectly lined up to do a nice hook up. I do have the aluminum plate that I used with the old factory cast, but with the Edelbrock you need to use a plate and two gaskets since the Autolite hangs over the edge of the intake causing a vacuum leak. I believe these manifolds were designed with a Holley in mind since the old Tigers came with a Holley cfm.

Ford FE Engine Intake Manifolds: The Ultimate Guide

One third of the valve cover extends over the intake casting, and the pushrods run through cast or machined passages in the manifold. The FE manifolds are comparatively wide and heavy, and have numerous machined surfaces that interface with the heads, block, distributor, valvetrain, and valve covers. With an original manufacturing and performance use history that extends over a year period, virtually every intake fashion and style has been produced for the FE, albeit in far fewer variations than for the more popular engines.

The builder can choose from original or aftermarket; single 4-barrel, dual-quad, three 2-barrels, six 2-barrels; tunnel rams or cross rams; single plane or dual plane; aluminum or iron. Depending on the desired cosmetics and performance any of these choices can be the right one for a given project. I’ve been online the past few days researching how to set up the PCV, along with the breather, and what are the correct parts I need to purchase. In searching, I see the different people install and connect the PCV differently. I just got my engine back from the builder.

Emissions equipment Thermostat Housing Problems When I rebuilt the V8 in my ’77 Jeep Wagoneer, I noticed that one of the thermostat housing bolt holes was partially clogged with something. Attempting to drill out the hole only killed the drill bit, so I’m assuming that the object was a piece of a broken tap or some other super-hard object. About nine months later before a long road trip , I decided I ought to fix it.

This past summer, I was driving the truck daily to work as my daily driver was down for repairs. The main office secretary would often comment that she liked my truck but wondered why “it smelled like gas”. After a drive in warm-to-hot weather, the truck would have a gas odor when it was parked for a few hours.

Enter, the charcoal canister. This little gem is often tossed. Older Fords don’t even have this.
